Ankle Deep in the Wrong Diagnosis

Ankle Deep in the Wrong Diagnosis

Any number of pathologies produces lateral heel pain. As Chris Mallac explains in the first instalment of his master class on chronic ankle instability (CAI), lateral heel pain is often the result of repeated ankle sprain. Mallac goes on to describe how CAI can lead to sinus tarsi syndrome, causing lateral heel pain and rear foot instability. Alicia Filley further explains how some theorize that chronic ankle instability arises from undiagnosed peroneal dysfunction.

Running from Injury

Running from Injury

Last year a landmark study revealed that vertical loading forces, long thought the scourge of injured distance and recreational runners, are likely not the causes of repeated injuries(1). Rather, Canadian researchers found that when evaluating kinetic variables in 65 healthy female runners, only peak braking force (PBF) significantly predicted repeated running injury (RRI)(1). Specifically, those with a PBF of .27 body weight (BW) had a nearly eight times greater chance of developing a subseq...

Which Exercises are the Best for Glute Strengthening?

Running injuries to the knees and ankles often occur as a result of gluteal weakness. Without stability at the pelvis, the lower body bears the brunt of the forces of running in ways they weren’t designed to do. 7 Things to Know About Treating Masters Runners

In the second part of our series on the aging runner, we look at running-related injuries and how to treat them. Masters runners report more injuries, more often, than younger runners(1). These aches and pains are likely to occur in the muscles and tendons of the posterior chain – hamstrings, plantar flexors, and Achilles tendons. In fact, the number one running-related injury in the Master population is Achilles tendinopathy(1). Older runners may suffer from these injuries more often due to ...

Physiological and Biomechanical Changes in the Aging Runner

The New Year often brings resolutions to be more active. Runners who gather renewed resolve to hit the trail may register for an upcoming race to inspire their training. Statistics show that the age of those participating in races is increasing dramatically. From 1980 – 2000, the New York City Marathon showed an almost 200% increase in runners over the age of 40 years1. When researchers drilled down into the specific age groups, they found that the over 60-year-old brackets quadrupled their p...
