A defender in his playing days, Powell turned out for numerous clubs, including Derby County, Charlton and West Ham. He also made five appearances for the England team. After finishing his career at Leicester City, he joined the club’s coaching staff and enjoyed a short spell as caretaker manager in October 2010.
Appointed manager of Charlton Athletic in January 2011, he secured promotion to the Championship as champions the following season and was voted LMA League One Manager of the Year. He subsequently spent a year as manager of Huddersfield, followed by a stint as assistant manager of Derby County, before taking over at League One club Southend in January 2018.
