David Artell

As a player David Artell was a tough lower league defender who won three promotions during his time in the Football League – two with Rotherham and one with Crewe, who he captained to victory in the League Two play-off final in 2012.

When he kicked off his coaching career, it was with Crewe, where he served as academy manager before becoming manager of the first team in January 2017. He helped the club to avoid relegation that season. In 2020 he took the club to promotion.

Highly educated, he has a BSc in forensic and analytical science, a BSc in forensic biology, and a PGCE in biomedical science. He is a Gibraltar international.
