Wide players and shape

Wide players and shape

This session is about wide players making quick, dynamic, well-timed runs, so as to create goalscoring opportunities. It’s important to practise this because, in the modern era, there are many different systems of play, and in all of these wide players are asked and expected to pose a strong goalscoring threat when linking with strikers. This can be the difference in key moments in any game.

Biography

Less than nine months after retiring from professional football, David Unsworth found himself acting as caretaker-manager of then Championship side Preston North End, in December 2009. Two years later he again assumed the role, before stepping aside for new manager Graham Westley. Moving on to Everton, as U21, then U23 coach, he was again twice named caretaker manager. As a player, the centre-back played for England Under-21s from 1994, before embarking on an impressive professional career that saw him perform at the top level for 16 years, for Everton, West Ham United, Portsmouth and Wigan Athletic, amongst others. Unsworth made one appearance for the England national team, and regularly participates in media work on radio and television.
