Coaching Sessions

Finish the attack

Finish the attack

This session is all about link-up play in the final third of the pitch and it focuses on attacking crosses and finishing, whilst encouraging players to use good movement and the correct weight of pass. It also tests the decision-making of the team.
Making the right choice

Making the right choice

This session is about players moving and reacting to different situations in tight spaces – by that, we mean making the right choice between keeping possession and trying to score a goal.
Switching play

Switching play

This session is about maximising space so as to be able to switch the ball quickly in creating positive attacking options. And at the heart of this is helping players recognise when to play forward and when to switch play. It’s important to practise this because moving the ball quickly with both short and long passes gives us the chance to create 1v1 situations or overloads, which are key situations for exploiting the opposition.
Attacking & defending

Attacking & defending

This session focuses on the techniques of attacking and defending in and around the penalty area, giving players the opportunity to rehearse not only counter-attacking situations, but to attack and defend crosses from deep and from the by-line. It is a high intensity session that involves plenty of running and lots of accelerations and decelerations.
Possession moving into the attacking third

Possession moving into the attacking third

The emphasis of this session is ‘speed of attacking’, with a view to being clinical in attacking in the final third, and taking in movement, clever play, combinations and overloads

Biography

After a playing career that saw him represent Nottingham Forest, Liverpool, Manchester City and England, Nigel Clough moved into non- league football as player-manager of Burton Albion. He led the club from the seventh tier of the English game to the brink of promotion to League Two before leaving to follow in the footsteps of his famous father, Brian, and take over as manager of Derby County. He subsequently served as manager of Sheffield United, where he was voted the LMA’s FA Cup Manager of the Year in recognition of United’s run to the semi-finals of the competition in 2014. The following season, Clough also led the Blades to the semi-finals of the League Cup. He returned to Burton Albion in December 2015, finishing the season as runners-up in League One and leading the club to promotion to the Championship for the first time in its history. His two stints as Burton manager saw him take charge of more than 900 league games. Clough was appointed manager of Mansfield Town in November 2020.
