Coaching Sessions

Think forward and play forward

Think forward and play forward

In possession, a team is at its most dangerous when a player can make a forward pass to a team mate running in a forward direction. This session creates many of these types of situations.
Block and break; Block and build

Block and break; Block and build

This session is about defending as a unit from around the halfway line with two banks of four, with a no.10 and no.9 ready to support the counter-attack or build the attack.
Block and counter from halfway

Block and counter from halfway

The philosophy of this session is based on the idea that it’s okay for the opposition to have the ball as long as our players are organised and alert. This works particularly well when playing away from home against higher-ranked opposition, with players clearly understanding their roles and responsibilities, whilst being ready to break up an attack, move forward and create a chance on goal.
The passing diamond

The passing diamond

The passing diamond is a coaching move that, while simple in its set-up, is crucial for players in rehearsing passing accuracy and tempo. It is also important for general ball work and encouraging the use of both feet.
Press & protect

Press & protect

This is a simple defensive session that encourages players to press high and press aggressively. It also conditions players to respond with speed to a successful turnover of possession, resulting in quick counter-attacks.
Passing between and through the lines

Passing between and through the lines

If your team is set up to pass the ball, use this session to practise passing through and around the lines of defence. It focuses on keeping the ball on the floor, with players encouraged to find positive blind side angles of attack.
