Phil Brown took his coaching badges while still a player at Bolton Wanderers and got his first taste of management as the club’s caretaker boss for six games in 1999.
He was appointed manager of Derby County in 2005, but it was at Hull City that he enjoyed his first big managerial successes, leading the ‘Tigers’ to promotion to the Premier League in 2008. He spent the following two seasons managing Hull in the top flight.
After a spell in charge of Preston North End, he went on to enjoy five years at Southend United, achieving promotion to League One via the playoffs. After spells in charge of Swindon Town and Hyderabad FC in the Indian Super League, Brown returned to Southend as manager in April 2021.
