Positivity and awareness

This session teaches players to stay positive and aware in game situations, with a focus on moving play forward at all times. It encourages players to think about what’s ahead of and around them and relies on a good first touch and the use of clever angled passes.

Biography

Willie Donachie enjoyed a highly successful playing career which included him representing Scotland in the 1978 World Cup Finals. He went on to win 35 caps for his country. At club level, Willie played in over 300 games for Manchester City and also played in two cup finals. He began his coaching career with Oldham Athletic, as player-assistant manager to Joe Royle. Under Royle and Donachie Oldham enjoyed considerable success at Boundary Park, where they guided the Latics to the Premier League, League Cup Final and FA Cup semi Finals against Manchester United in the 1990s. Royle was then appointed manager of Everton in 1995 and Donachie followed joined him as his assistant before being appointed First Team Coach at Sheffield United. He was soon to team up again with Royle as towards the end of the 1997-98 season he re-joined him at Manchester City. When Royle left Manchester City, Donachie worked as First Team Coach under Kevin Keegan before he became assistant to Terry Yorath at Sheffield Wednesday in November 2001. After working with the Owls Willie joined Ipswich Town to again assist Royle before he later joined Millwall as assistant to Nigel Spackman. After Spackman's departure, he was appointed manager of Millwall on 22 November 2006 after a period of serving as caretaker. He went on to help secure the club's League One status. After Millwall, Donachie also took charge of Antigua & Barbuda before joining Newcastle United's academy in December 2009 then Hartlepool United as assistant manager. He then went to the US, to coach Temecula, in California, before becoming manager of Montserrat.
