Wide players and shape – Issue 21 (April 2012)
Less than nine months after retiring from professional football, David Unsworth found himself acting as caretaker-manager of then Championship side Preston North End, in December 2009. Two years later he again assumed the role, before stepping aside for new manager Graham Westley.
As a player, the centreback played for England Under-21s from 1994, before embarking on an impressive professional career that saw him perform at the top level for 16 years, for Everton, West Ham United, Portsmouth and Wigan Athletic, amongst others.
The 38-year-old also made one appearance for the England national team, and regularly participates in media work on radio and television.
