In 2012/13 season, his first in charge at npower Championship side Birmingham City, Lee Clark steered the St. Andrews club to an impressive mid-table finish. Although the Blues’ medium-term ambitions focus on a return to the Premier League – which they departed in 2011 – off-field ownership and financial issues have hampered progress, and in difficult conditions Clark has succeeded in galvanising his players.

The 40-year-old’s nononsense managerial style has won him many admirers, and he spent four successful years at Huddersfield Town between 2008 and 2012, guiding the club on a record 43-match unbeaten run.

As a player, Clark was a domineering midfield figure for Newcastle United (across two spells), Sunderland and Fulham.
