Assess, Don’t Guess: Using Objective Data to Guide Sports Injury Rehabilitation

Luke van Zyl explores how objective data can sharpen clinical reasoning and improve decision-making throughout sports injury rehabilitation. Drawing on his experience in elite football and performance technology, he highlights why clinicians should assess, not guess, when guiding patients back to activity.

Biography

Luke van Zyl is a Physiotherapist based in the UK. He spent 10 years working in elite football across women’s, men’s, and youth environments before transitioning into a non-clinical role with VALD, an Australian healthcare and performance technology company. During his time in professional sport, Luke regularly used objective measurement systems, including VALD’s ForceFrame, NordBord, and ForceDecks, to support athlete screening, monitoring, and rehabilitation. This experience shaped his interest in data-informed decision-making and its role in improving clinical practice. For the past three years, Luke has supported, trained, and educated VALD clients across the UK and Europe. His work focuses on helping clinicians and performance teams use objective data to guide rehabilitation, enhance decision-making, and improve outcomes across both elite and everyday healthcare settings.
