Transitions

The transfer of possession from one team to another

For a long time much of the game’s tactical focus was on retaining the ball when in possession. Recently though that focus has shifted to the moments when possession passes from one team to another.

What players do in the immediate seconds after losing or gaining possession has never been more crucial. On gaining possession are players looking to move forward and counter quickly, or are they seeking to secure possession and slow the game down. On losing possession are they immediately pressing to try and win the ball back (likely high up the pitch) or are they simply trying to slow the opposition down and allow their team to regain its shape?

With so many options it’s obvious why our elite coaches spend a considerable amount of time working on their players’ decision making and reactions in these situations.
