April 2024

We welcome you to another edition of Elite Soccer, with sessions and views from some of the leading coaches in our game.

Our cover feature is a fascinating contribution from a terrific coach, Slaven Bilic of Al-Fateh - a wonderful player himself as well, of course. His session encourages possession and sharp decision-making, using his experience across leagues and continents to bring together some practices all players will love.

Manchester United Women’s first-team coach Marc Skinner and assistant Charlotte Healy are creating one of Europe’s best women’s clubs, and here they outline a session on counterpressing, based around work in possession and winning the ball back when necessary.

As a youth coach at Crystal Palace’s academy, Ben Garner worked with rising talent including Wilfried Zaha and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and in this issue he outlines how to break down a defensive block - something he says is becoming harder and harder as teams become stronger and better organised at the back.

Richard Dobson’s contributions to Wycombe Wanderers’ success in recent years cannot be underestimated, serving as assistant to Peter Taylor and then Gareth Ainsworth. He offers some insight here on how to play forward in possession, encouraging players to make positive decisions.

Long-serving Kidderminster Harriers assistant coach Jim O’Connor looks at how to make a team compact and difficult to play through in defence and midfield.

And QPR’s assistant head of academy coaching, Manisha Tailor, talks about her life in football and how she is contributing towards the game’s future.

As always, do send us your thoughts and feedback on this issue and what you’d like to see in Elite Soccer in the future. We look forward to continuing to provide you with useful, interesting sessions from coaches at all levels of the sport.
