Welcome to the first issue of Elite Soccer for 2024.
The magazine continues to go from strength to strength. We can promise that, if this new year edition is anything to go by, there is a lot more to come in our promotion of sessions by some of the biggest names and finest coaching talents in the UK and further afield.
Frank Lampard is one of the best players of the Premier League era, renowned as a goalscoring midfielder with distinction for club and country. We are proud to showcase one of his sessions, focusing on sustaining attacks.
A rising star within coaching and management is Steven Schumacher, whose work with Plymouth Argyle has not gone unnoticed by Stoke City – who recently appointed him as manager. Steven took time out of his busy schedule to provide his thoughts on counter attacking, of note in preparation for upcoming opposition.
The AFC Wimbledon coaching team of manager Johnnie Jackson and his assistant, Terry Skiverton, also offer a session on a similar theme – concentrating on movement, including the benefits of utilising overlaps and underlaps.
Clinton Lancaster became the first full-time manager of the Aberdeen women’s side in 2023, having built his reputation in the coaching set-up of clubs including Chelsea and Crystal Palace. His session offers insight into playing through and breaking lines.
Another person making his way in the game is James McPike, part of the coaching set-up of Wolverhampton Wanderers. James looks at 1v1 duels, with particular focus on developing players’ mindset and approach when these challenges occur.
We are also delighted to welcome back Ben Bartlett, who has been working with Houston Dynamo in the MLS as their director of methodology. He provides an in-depth overview of his principles of practice design and training components.
I hope you find these sessions beneficial when considering your own coaching ideas. As always,
we would be delighted to hear from you if any of the sessions have helped, or if you have been
able to adapt any of the sessions into your own coaching philosophy.
Since 2010 Elite Soccer has given subscribers exclusive insight into the training ground practices of the world’s best coaches. Published in partnership with the League Managers Association we have unparalleled access to the leading lights in the English leagues, as well as a host of international managers.
Elite Soccer exclusively features sessions written by the coaches themselves. There are no observed sessions and no sessions “in the style of”, just first-hand advice delivered direct to you from the coach.
