March 2024

We are delighted to bring you another edition of Elite Soccer, containing sessions from some of the most forward thinking coaches in the game today.

Forward thinking is very much the theme of our showcase session with a player renowned for scoring goals at club and international level – who is now making his mark coaching overseas.

Robbie Keane has impressed with Maccabi Tel Aviv in his first major managerial role - and we’re privileged to have two sessions from the Republic of Ireland legend, focusing on finishing patterns, including using the third phase overload.

Our second session is with another former Premier League and international player looking to make his name in coaching. Quinton Fortune spent seven seasons under the tutelage of one of the managerial greats in Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, and his session has been developed from this experience of top-level football, providing a unique perspective on how to improve your defensive awareness from the full-back position.

A coach making an impact in the Football League pyramid is Michael Skubala at Lincoln City, who has made impressive progressive having entered the game via university football. His session looks at counter pressing principles and rest defence, as well as counter-pressing possession.

Michael Johnson was a consistent performer for clubs including Birmingham City during his lengthy playing career - and his most recent work has been with The FA. Despite being known for stopping goals, he offers thoughts on scoring at the other  end of the pitch with his attacking session utilising the overload.

Russell Penn earned plaudits for his work in taking Kidderminster Harriers to the National League. In his session he also offers insight into using attacking overloads, focusing more on counter attacks, as well as looking at match preparation.

There’s also a fascinating feature with John Allpress, latterly assistant head of academy player and coach development at Tottenham Hotspur, who offers thoughts on the keys to success in how to guide players at a key period in their fledgling careers.

As always we welcome your feedback and ideas for future Elite Soccer sessions, and look forward to continuing to provide you with thought-provoking sessions from coaches at all levels.
