With a new issue each month, there's plenty to read in ES. But don't worry, if you fall behind in your reading you'll be able to go back and catch up on past issues by downloading them from our issue library. These issues are available exclusively to subscribers.
Welcome to the May 2023 issue of Elite Soccer. In this month’s magazine we have five more training ground sessions written by some of the best managers and coaches working in the British game.
We begin this issue with a session written for us by Ange Postecoglou, the Australian manager of reigning
Scottish Premiership champions Celtic. Focused on penetration, it’s a training plan aimed at encouraging
players to improve both their movement off the ball and their penetrative passing on it. It’s a plan that
forms a highly important part of Celtic’s game model.
Willie Kirk is a Scottish coach who is currently the manager of Leicester City Women and he has
shared an interesting practice focused on individual positional training within a group session.
Still in the early days of his coaching career, former Crawley Town interim manager, Lewis Young, has penned a counter-attacking session that works for the whole team, offering forwards some attacking solutions and giving defensive players a few things to think about too.
Paul McGuinness is a coach with a wealth of experience at the academies of both Manchester
United and Leicester City. His session in this issue is all about winning the ball back and breaking forwards
quickly to score.
A former academy manager at Rotherham United, Tony Morton closes this month’s issue with a session
on receiving and combining in crowded area. It’s a series of practices and progressions that work on
encouraging players to play with their heads up and helps them to make the most of their opportunities
to both pass and receive.
I hope you find that these sessions will assist your coaching and please let us know how you get on. We
will return next month with five more training ground activities to help develop your team
Since 2010 Elite Soccer has given subscribers exclusive insight into the training ground practices of the world’s best coaches. Published in partnership with the League Managers Association we have unparalleled access to the leading lights in the English leagues, as well as a host of international managers.
Elite Soccer exclusively features sessions written by the coaches themselves. There are no observed sessions and no sessions “in the style of”, just first-hand advice delivered direct to you from the coach.
