Coaching Sessions

Beating a high press

Beating a high press

The purpose of this session is to help us in our preparation for a match day when we’re due to face a high-pressing team who are very effective at putting pressure on the ball. The players benefit greatly from this session because it allows us to play more directly to our front players when the opponents are pressing us high in our own half.

Biography

Alex Neil has been manager of Championship club Preston since July 2017. After a playing career that took him to Airdrieonians, Barnsley, Mansfield and Hamilton Academical, he first made the transition to coaching in 2013 as player-manager of Hamilton, having already worked with some of the club’s youth teams. He achieved promotion to the Scottish Premiership after just a year at the helm and, once back in the top flight, the ‘Accies’ even beat Celtic away for the first time in 76 years. Moving to EFL Championship club Norwich City in January 2015, his team won 17 out of the 25 remaining league matches that season and achieved promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs after victory over Middlesbrough at Wembley. He spent most of the next season leading the ‘Canaries’ in the top flight.
