This is a session focused on breaking down a defensive block. It is the final part of an attack if you have successfully progressed possession into the attacking third.

This session focuses on pressing and recovering with intensity. Within the session there is a position-specific element, where the players are broken down into groups and the situations are specific and functional.

Defending against the counter-attack and reacting quickly to these transitions of play is important. That’s because in the modern era, once teams win possession they are capable of breaking forward at great speed and with real quality.

Biography

Ben Garner started his career as a youth coach at Crystal Palace’s academy - working with players including Wilfried Zaha and Aaron Wan-Bissaka - before stepping up to coach the first team for the next ten years.

In 2015, he moved on to West Bromwich Albion, where he was appointed assistant head coach, and in 2019 he took the same role at Indian Super League club ATK, working with Steve Coppell.

Garner was appointed manager of Bristol Rovers in November 2019, moving on to Swindon Town, where he led the club to a play-off semi-final in 2021-22.

After a brief spell at Charlton Athletic, he took over as head coach of Colchester United in March 2023.
