Colin Calderwood

Colin Calderwood has won a series of promotions as a player, a manager and an assistant manager. The Stranraer-born defender's playing career started in bizarre circumstances at Mansfield Town where less than two months after his 17th birthday he was drafted into the team but his registration papers - he had been with a Scottish junior team - had not reached the FA in time and Mansfield were deducted two League points for fielding an unregistered player. He joined Swindon, then in the Fourth Division, in 1985 and made over 300 League appearances for the club as they climbed to the Premiership. A natural leader, he was Swindon's captain at the age of 20, Calderwood also won 31 full international caps with Scotland and made more than 600 League appearances. The Scot joined Spurs from Swindon in 1993 and made over 200 appearances in almost six years at White Hart Lane. He subsequently had briefer spells at Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and, on loan, Notts County. Calderwood retired and moved back to White Hart Lane to work on the coaching staff, starting the second leg of his football career, which eventually led him to Northampton. He was initially appointed as first team coach in October 2003. The fifth manager in four years at Sixfields, Calderwood took charge of The Cobblers with the team lying 18th in Division Three having won just four of their first 13 games of the season. Calderwood achieved success by taking Northampton to promotion in 2006. The Cobblers also set a new club record for the number of clean sheets held by the club - being 25. In May 2006, he was confirmed as the new manager of Nottingham Forest. Another promotion followed for Calderwood, as Forest finished in second-place in League One in 2007/08, thereby winning promotion to the Championship. Calderwood and Forest then parted company in December 2008 before he joined Newcastle as assistant to Chris Hughton. More success followed as Newcastle clinched promotion back to the Barclays Premier League, as champions, in April 2010. Colin was appointed manager of Hibernian in the SPL before working again with Hughton at Birmingham City, Norwich City and Brighton.  A spell as assistant to Steve Bruce at Aston Villa was followed by one as manager at Cambridge United. He is also a graduate of the LMA's Certificate of Applied Management at Warwick University.
