Biography

Danny Wilson is the manager who took Barnsley into the Premier League for the first time in 1997 leading to their debut season in the top flight. He is among the rare group of managers to have taken charge of more than 1,000 matches. He began his managerial career with the Tykes, initially as a player-manager, in 1994.  In that season, Barnsley reached the FA Cup quarter-finals after defeating favourites Manchester United in the fifth round. After Barnsley, Wilson became manager of Sheffield Wednesday in the summer of 1998. The side finished in 12th place in his first season and the following year he was named Manager of the Month in January 2000. Following Wednesday, Wilson became boss at Bristol City in June 2000. In April 2003, Wilson led the Robins to success in the Football League Trophy. In December 2004, Wilson became manager of MK Dons and saved the side from relegation in his first season. Wilson was then appointed the new boss of Hartlepool United in the summer of 2006 leading the side to promotion at the first attempt. After leaving Hartlepool in December 2008 Wilson was announced as the new manager of Swindon Town on Boxing Day 2008. Again success followed as Wilson pulled Town away from the relegation zone. Wilson remarkably led Swindon to the play-off final the following season at Wembley where his side narrowly missed out on promotion to Millwall. He remained with the club until March 2011. He next managed Sheffield United In his first full season at Bramall Lane the Blades finished 3rd despite amassing an impressive 90 points. Wilson's side then agonisingly missed out on a return to the Championship as they lost in a penalty shoot-out to Huddersfield Town in the play-off final. He subsequently had a second spell at Barnsley during which time he completed 1,000 matches as manager. His most recent role was manager of Chesterfield. As a player Danny Wilson represented Bury, Chesterfield, Nottingham Forest, Brighton & Hove Albion, Luton Town, Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley - resulting in over 600 career appearances. He won 24 caps for Northern Ireland, as won the League Cup with both Luton Town in 1988 and Sheffield Wednesday in 1991.
