Creating scoring opportunities from wide areas

Wide Play

This session is all about building relationships in wide areas. The players are given guidelines but they also have lots of freedom to break down a low block or a set defence.

Playing through the thirds

In Possession

This session is all about encouraging the team to play through the thirds, with a particular emphasis on keeping the ball on the floor in all areas of the pitch. It’s geared towards creating skilful players who can handle the ball under pressure and it gives players plenty of touches, which will keep them constantly engaged.

Small-sided fitness game

Fitness & Conditioning

This is a football-specific fitness session in the format of a small-sided game, although it can be used to target other areas of development, such as focusing on 2v2s and 3v3s or even individual player fitness.

Biography

As a player David Artell was a tough lower league defender who won three promotions during his time in the Football League – two with Rotherham and one with Crewe, who he captained to victory in the League Two playoff final in 2012. He represented Gibraltar at international level.

When he kicked off his coaching career, it was with Crewe, where he first served as academy manager before becoming manager of the first team in January 2017. He helped the club to avoid relegation that season and set about rebuilding the squad.

In 2020 he took the club to promotion after finishing as runners up in the title race and he was voted LMA League Two manager of the season in acknowledgement of this achievement. He left Crewe in April 2022.

David is the holder of a UEFA Pro Licence and has also got an LMA Diploma in Football Management.
