About Philippe
Philippe Clement played primarily as a centre back or centre defensive midfielder in a career that saw him feature for Beerschot, Genk, Coventry City, Germinal Beerschot and, perhaps most significantly, Club Brugge, where he spent a decade, racking up over 250 appearances.
Clement also represented the Belgian national team on 38 occasions, appearing at both the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.
After hanging up his boots in 2011, Clement stepped into coaching, returning to Brugge as U21s head coach. The following season, he became assistant coach of the first team under Georges Leekens, going on to take an interim head coach role for two games, between the dismissal of Leekens and the appointment of Juan Carlos Garrido.
Clement remained Brugge assistant under Garrido, before, again, stepping up to be interim head coach following his dismissal, and reverting once more to assistant under the newly appointed Michel Preud’homme.
During this six-year period Clement spent at the club, Brugge won the Belgian Cup, the Championship and the Super Cup, and achieved runners-up status in the Belgian Pro League four times.
Clement took on his first head coach role in May 2017, at second tier Belgian side Waasland-Beveren, now known as SK Beveren, before moving to Genk in December of the same year, another club for which he’d previously played.
In his first season in charge, Clement led his team to the Belgian Cup Final and Europa League qualification. The following season, Genk made the last 32 in the Europa League, qualified for the UEFA Champions League, and won the league title, pipping Clement’s former club, Club Brugge, to the post by seven points.
In May 2019, Clement returned to Brugge once again. He spent three more seasons with the club, and in that time reached the Belgian Cup final, the last 32 of the Europa League, and won the league title, with former club Genk coming second. He went on to clinch the Belgian Super Cup in a 3-2 victory against his old employer.
In early 2022, Clement left Brugge for France, where he took the helm of Ligue 1 side AS Monaco where he stayed until mid-2023, transforming the club’s fortunes in his first season, but failing to continue the good form in his second.
In October of the same year, Clement joined Scottish Premiership club Rangers. In his first season in charge, the team achieved a 16-game unbeaten run and finished runners-up in both the league and Scottish Cup, with Celtic clinching both titles.
The following season, Rangers reached the League Cup final, again losing to Celtic. Clement left Rangers in February 2025.
Since November 2025, Clement has been head coach of EFL Championship side Norwich City.
He holds the UEFA Pro Licence.
