Defending as a zonal back four

In this session, we try to give players an understanding of their roles and responsibilities in defensive zones in and around the box – this includes defending individually and as a back four unit. We also look at covering, team balance, and the ability to support.

Biography

A non-League specialist John Still has led teams into the Football League three times. Still accomplished the feat with Maidstone United (1989), Dagenham & Redbridge 2007) and Luton Town (2014). Other achievements have included winning the Isthmian League with the newly-merged Leytonstone and Ilford in 1982 shortly after taking his first job in management. It was also the club's first title. John then won the Southern League with Dartford. After a fleeting return to Leytonstone and Ilford, he took charge of Maidstone, guiding them to the Conference title and promotion to the League in 1989. He subsequently managed the Daggers three times, Barnet three times, Peterborough and Luton before returning to Maidstone as Head of Football in 2019. He retired in 2020 at the age of 70.
