This easy to set up training activity is all about keeping hold of the ball in tight areas. It helps players to understand the pressing need to be alert to their chances to break out of the rondo in order to switch the play.

Biography

After a lengthy playing career spent largely as a defender at Rotherham United, Paul Hurst retired in 2008. Along with former team mate Rob Scott, he was appointed joint manager of Northern Premier League club Ilkeston Town in January 2009. In their first season in charge, they led Ilkeston to promotion to the Conference North via the play-offs. They also achieved the same feat the following season with Boston United.

The pair joined Grimsby Town as co-managers in March 2011, with Hurst taking sole control of the team after Scott’s departure in 2013. Under Hurst, the club reached the play-offs on four consecutive occasions, before finally gaining promotion back to the Football League in 2016. That year he also led the club to the FA Trophy final at Wembley.

He was appointed manager of League One side, Shrewsbury Town, in October 2016, spending two seasons at New Meadow and receiving the EFL League One Manager of the Year award after reaching the finals of both the play-offs and the FA trophy.

After a spell as manager of EFL Championship side, Ipswich Town, and League Two club, Scunthorpe United, in December 2020 he returned to Grimsby Town. He couldn’t save the struggling club from relegation to the National League but the following season he led The Mariners back into the Football League after victory in the play-offs.

He has a UEFA ‘A’ coaching licence and a degree in Professional Sports Writing and Broadcasting.
