Coaching Sessions

Win the ball and break

Win the ball and break

This session is about winning the ball back and breaking quickly to score – it’s based in the middle third of the pitch but the skills learned are fundamental to each third. The session’s main focus is actually on defending to win the ball back but the attackers could be coached on the counter-attacking elements of the practice by another coach if the session is able to be dual-coached.

Biography

As a player, Paul McGuinness came through the youth ranks at Manchester United and went on to play for Crewe Alexandra and Chester City. Turning to coaching, he worked at Manchester United’s academy as head coach of the professional development phase and in his 24 years at the club he oversaw the development of the likes of Marcus Rashford, Danny Welbeck and Axel Tuanzebe, to name but a few. As coach of Manchester United’s U18s, he led the Red Devils to victory in the FA Youth Cup in 2011 with a team that featured the talents of Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Ravel Morrison. Leaving United in 2016, he spent four years as a national coach developer with the Football Association before joining Leicester City’s academy in 2021 as head of player development. Leaving Leicester in September 2022, Paul currently works as a consultant, mentoring both players and coaches and giving coaching demonstrations and presentations. A UEFA Pro licensed coach, he holds a degree in physical education and sports science from Loughborough University. Paul is the son of former Manchester United player and manager Wilf McGuinness.
